Headteacher Newsletter 421

Dear parents,

Please read on for information on our new Value, Cinema Club, Special Sport Mornings, World Book Day, Card Swapping Club and The Woodland Times.

Our New Value - Honesty!

As we begin a new term, we begin focusing on a new School Value. This term is Honesty. This week our local Reverend Nat from Grange Park Church led our first school assembly of the term and focused on the importance of Honesty. After a fun game of Would I Lie To You where the children learnt some interesting facts about Reverend Nat (including that she is a lead singer in a rock band), the children were told a Chinese tale about resisting the temptation to lie and the importance of honesty.

All classes will be focusing on Honesty throughout the term so please support us by reinforcing this key characteristic at home.

Cinema Club

The Friends of Woodland View are hosting Cinema Club on Monday for Foundation Stage to Year 5. This is always a popular event where the children enjoy a film, special drink and popcorn with their classmates. It is straight after school and finishes at 5pm. All children must be collected via the usual route. Those Year 6s not on residential are able to join the Year 5 children if they wish.

Please book via this link before Monday  www.pta-events.co.uk/friendsofwoodlandview

Special Sport Mornings

This half term, each year group will have a Special Sport Morning led by our Freestyle Coaches. These mornings are planned to further develop specific skills that link to their PE curriculum in a fun and challenging way. Children will need to wear PE kits on these days. We will send you a reminder Ping on the day before your child’s session.
Friday 1st March (tomorrow) - Y1
Monday 11th March - Y4
Friday 15th March - Y2
Tuesday 19th March - Foundation Stage
Friday 22nd March - Y5
Monday 25th March - Y3
Year 6 parents will notice that Year 6 are not on the above list; this is because their session is being carried over to next term.

World Book Day Reminder

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 8th March (next week).
All children are invited to come to school dressed up as a character/figure from their favourite Non-Fiction book. This could be a scientist, gardener or a famous footballer; the choices are endless. However, if your child has their heart set on dressing up as a fictional character for the day, then this is very welcome too!

The children will spend World Book Day being completely immersed in reading and engaging with high-quality texts.

The well-known children’s book, ‘Ten Word Tiny Tales’ will be the stimulus for a whole school writing task, enabling children to become authors, poets and illustrators.

Bedtime Stories
Mrs Matsangou is on a mission to get every child to have a bedtime story.

Reading at home not only increases academic ability, but it also helps to strengthen family relationships and foster a lifelong love of books. This is particularly important for primary-age children who go through a period of great change between the ages of 4 and 11: they are learning to read, discovering their likes and dislikes and taking their first big steps into the world.
A bedtime story can be the anchor to all this, helping children to explore new feelings, new experiences and new knowledge in a safe environment.

We hope you’re able to make time to read bedtime stories to your child!

Competition
Snuggling up with a favourite book can be all the more fun with a comfy pillow to lean on - a bedtime story pillow.

On Friday 8th March we will be launching a ‘Make Your Own Story Pillow’ competition.

The children are invited to decorate a pillow/pillowcase in any way that entices them to read. This could be a drawing of a favourite book character(s), quotes from their favourite books or the front cover of their favourite book - the opportunities are endless.

Rules:
Children can draw, paint, sew, stick or print onto a pillowcase. This must be their own work (with the help of a grown-up) but not a shop bought printed design.
All entries must be submitted to Mrs Matsangou by Friday 22nd March.
The judging panel will consist of 4 reading ambassadors plus our leading specialist teaching team.

Judging will take place on Monday 25th March 2024 and the winners will be announced during our Values assemblies on Thursday 28th March 2024.

Card Swapping Club

Miss Ryan is hosting a card swapping club on Wednesday lunchtimes for children in Years 1-6. This means that children can bring in their collectable cards (Pokemon, Match Attax, etc) on Wednesdays only. Hopefully the children enjoy this opportunity to do some much-needed swaps!

Parents Evening Reminder

Parents Evening is happening soon (week beginning 18th March). If you haven’t booked yet, please see the booking Ping sent out on 14th February.
