    Celebrating Holi at Woodland View

Last week, children at Woodland View learnt all about Holi in their classes and during an assembly led by Miss Drake, our Diversity Lead. They explored the meaning behind the Hindu festival and got creative by decorating bunting in a variety of different ways. This beautiful bunting has been displayed around the playground and at the front of the school, adding a burst of colour and vibrancy to our surroundings.

On Friday 14th March, we marked the festival with special Holi activities in Miss Drake’s classroom at lunchtime. Children worked together on tissue paper spring trees, created bonfire art inspired by the Holika bonfire and enjoyed Holi-themed colouring and paper chains. It was a fantastic opportunity to get creative and celebrate together.

Celebrating Holi is part of our four-year rolling plan at Woodland View where we aim to celebrate different religious festivals each year in a variety of ways. This ensures we recognise and appreciate the diverse backgrounds of all our children, making our school a place where everyone feels valued.

A big thank you to everyone who took part – we loved celebrating with you!

  • Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics – County

    Published 27/02/25

Earlier today, a squad of Year 6 children represented the school at the county Sportshall athletics competition in Kettering. The squad earned their place at the county finals after a fantastic 1st place finish at the district event in late January.

Sportshall athletics includes many different events: sprinting, jumping, throwing and working as a team. Throughout the competition, children compete in track and field events to help score points for their team.

It was a pleasure for Mr Willars, Mrs Walker and Mr Oelrich to attend this event with the children as they showed amazing cooperation, respect and determination during all the events. They are extremely proud of the children too for cheering each other on loudly and enthusiastically in all events. It was a treat for us to be able to see children excelling and giving their all in the field events too!

After completing all of their events, it was time for the children to find out how they had performed overall. Out of the 10 schools who competed in the event, Woodland View came a competitive 8th overall! This was an amazing achievement in a strong, and closely fought, competition; the squad have performed fantastically in both rounds and we are delighted with all they have achieved!

We are incredibly proud of our 2025 Sportshall squad as they have achieved a brilliant top 10 finish (out of over 100 schools who have competed at district level) at the county games! We can’t wait to see what other successes they have throughout the remaining academic year!

    Dear parents,

Please read on for information about our new Value, last term's awards assembly, World Book Day, Achieve With Me sessions, Family Learning Courses and Key Dates.

    New Term - New Value

As we begin a new tem, we focus on a new School Value. This term it’s HONESTY.  In assembly on Monday, I discussed some of the ways in which children can demonstrate honesty this term. This included having the courage to share our views when we think it’s important to do so. It’s not always easy giving our opinions, especially if we think they may differ from others’. However, I’m hoping the children are able to show this trait - be brave and be honest!

World Book Day - Friday 7th March

Next Friday is World Book Day and we would love the children to come to school dressed up as their favourite character from any story or non-fiction book. This could include; The Gruffalo, Alex Rider, a Dinosaur, Percy the Park Keeper, The Iron Man or Neil Armstrong - the options are endless. It is always a great addition if children are able to bring in a copy of the book that their character appears in to share with their classmates.
Here are some low-cost dressing up ideas:

    Parking

We have received some complaints recently from local residents regarding their driveways being blocked by parked cars during drop-off and collection times. If you must drive to school, please be respectful and courteous to our school community by not parking in front of driveways so that residents are able to leave their homes when they need to.

To further support the work we are doing on reducing traffic congestion outside of school, we will be having a Walking Bus Week later in the term. This will enable parents who do not live in Grange Park to drop their children at a local point, away from school, so that they can join a walking bus (led by staff) and walk safely to school. More information, including how you can sign up for the walking bus, will be shared soon.

  • Values Awards - Cooperation

    Published 19/02/25

On the final Friday of this half-term we celebrated one of our six values of COOPERATION. Mr Horsley led the awards - and the dancing - down our famous red carpet. The class teachers had each prepared something to say about the winners of this term's awards and explained how they demonstrated cooperation this term.

Winners are always encouraged to dance down the red carpet to receive their awards as the rest of the school clap encouragement.

In addition to Miss Wagstaff's inspirational poem selection about this term's value (see below), Mrs Matsangou - along with some of the Year 5s - had prepared a rap about cooperation, which they performed during the event. Here are the lyrics that they came up with.

Cooperation is a core life skill,
It helps you work together - respectfully
    Compromise is what you do
Collaborate with others and you'll all get through
If you work together, you'll achieve
Everyone is equal so just believe
Teamwork makes the dream work so keep... it... UP!

    Dear parents,

Storytelling Week (Including World Book Day) - Friday 7th March

Coming up after half term is Storytelling Week which encompasses World Book Day. This exciting week will be filled with activities which will immerse the children in developing their love for reading. As always, reading to your children as often as possible has a direct link to their educational success, wellbeing and ability to communicate effectively.

Our Storytelling Week finishes with World Book Day on Friday. Teachers are busy preparing some fun and engaging activities to promote books with the children. This day is also themed as a ‘dress-up’ day so children can come to school dressed as their favourite book characters from fiction books, or they could be inspired to wear clothes based on a non-fiction book.

Achieve With Me - week beginning 10th March - 2.30-3pm

Our next Achieve With Me sessions are approaching. This is a great opportunity to bring parents and children together in school to partake in some learning. It also gives you a chance to see what they are learning in school and an insight into how content is delivered.

The focus of these sessions is non-core learning. This means the wider curriculum subjects, such as History, Science, Art, Music, etc. The children will have had some input before you arrive so we are hoping they will be able to take a more leading role with your task and you can assist!

If you are able to come along, please arrive at the front of school by 2.30pm on your allotted day. If you have more than one child in the same session, we will be able to facilitate you being with them both/all - just let us know on arrival.

    Monday 10th March - Y1 & Y3
    Tuesday 11th March - Y2 & Y4
    Wednesday 12th March - FS
Thursday 13th March - no session
    Friday 14th March - Y5 & Y6

Parents’ Evening for FS-Y5 - Week beginning 24th March

    Parents' evening pointers

This is another opportunity to visit school to see what your child has been learning, look through school books and get teacher feedback on their progress. We will send a further communication after half term so you can book an appointment.

    Safer Internet Day

The 11th of February was Safer Internet Day 2025 - a fantastic day to remind ourselves - and the children - of the importance of being safe online. At Woodland View we are always looking for ways to ensure our children are both protected and have strategies for dealing with potential difficulties with the online world. Therefore, we:

    • have half-termly assemblies on different online safety themes
    • have half-termly lessons for the children in online safety
    • send out our monthly online safety newsletters that we Ping out to you about a variety of online safety themes and issues
    • take part in the yearly Safer Internet Day activities and events.

The theme of this year's Safer Internet Day was ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online‘. Therefore, this week at school, the children in all classes carried out some activities and a quiz on this year's theme of protecting themselves from online scams.

However, we know that learning is best when it is reinforced by lots of people surrounding the children. Therefore, if you wish to follow up at home with some more discussions or would like to engage your child with more activities about online safety generally or this year's theme please see the following recommended websites:

  • Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics - District

    Published 30/01/25

Earlier today, a squad of Year 6 children represented the school at the district Sportshall athletics competition. This competition is a Woodland View favourite and we have seen some great success at this event. Earlier in the year, our Year 3 and 4 squad were able to win their competition!

They are extremely proud of the children too for cheering each other on loudly and enthusiastically during the track events! In 12 running races, the team were able to achieve 9 commanding first-place finishes and 2 very close second-place finishes.

After completing all of their events, it was time for the children to find out how they had performed overall. In a field of thirteen strong schools, Woodland View came first overall!! They scored a staggering 525 points across all the events, beating the second-place school by more than 150 points!!

We are incredibly proud of our 2025 SHA squad! Because the team finished in first place, this gives them a great chance to represent the district at the county finals at the end of February. We are still waiting to hear whether we have reached this round as there was another competition this afternoon and we await confirmation of the results from that event.

We keep our fingers crossed for progression to the next round, but applaud our Y6 team for their amazing success so far!
